Cool What?

I would call BS on that statement.

I just picked up a 2006 S60 2.5T with 35K on the clock a couple of months back... I now have about 42K on her and I just had the water pump replaced. I took it in for an oil change and told them I heard a squeak (sometimes) coming from the belt/pulley area of the engine compartment. (Usually when it was warming up).

I never read anything in the manual about when the water pump should be changed.

In fact I have never heard of a water pump needing to be replaced at any specific mileage interval for any car.

On the S60's the water pump can not be seen/accessed with out removing the timing belt covers, so checking it for pulley shaft play/slop won't be as easy as on most cars.

I would just listen to the car... They usually talk to you when something is getting ready to go. Also water pumps will usually leak a bit when the bearings go inside and drip past the seals... Look and smell around for anti-freeze.

Oh by the way, I lucked out big time, my oil change was complementary and the pump was covered under the standard warranty... No charge to me. Chaa Ching!
Plus I'm good to 100K miles with the CPO deal.

Well...actually I think that's good advice. What he didn't tell you was that the timing belt needs to be changed around 100,000 (volvo says 105,000). While you are changing the belt, you might as well change the pump. I would.

I agree. While I don't know about pre 1990 Volvos, most bury the water pump inside the timing belt assembly. So when you do the timing belt, removing and replacing the water pump adds little in labor charges. What you don't want is to replace the timing belt (now) and then find a leaking water pump in 10K miles so the labor charge is effectively doubled. They are "wear" parts, and will eventually begin to leak. This is standard operating prodcedure on all cars with timing belts and overhead cams I've ever owned, i.e VW, Honda, Toyota. Not so on Detroit inline 6's and V8's from back in the day, but those days are gone.

You might also consider whether your timing belt has an idler assembly, too, and replace that at the same time for the same reason.

Water pump MUST be replaced at 150k but you already have the timing belt out at 100 so do it then. They are trying to save you a couple thousand miles with this recommendation.
