Mine is S60 2001, Automatic with 159,000kms....original. seems ok. Driven gently and just flushed with Amsoil...How many miles can I expect??

What do these trannies go for if they go south??

 

Mine is at 162k. Seems to be working good, just make sure to replace burnt fluid and keep a little gentle with the car.

 

On my '01 T5 Geartronic I'm at 126,000 miles. Two months ago I flushed it myself and put 3309 in. I did see an immediate improvement and still do, but just about 2,000 miles and it's already dark burgandy. Almost black...

I've noticed it starts to act funky after it's really hot and driven for a while. Just have to baby it pretty much then.

 

Transmission fluid replacement shouldn't begin over 100K.

A routine of a simple drain and fill every 30K would be the best preventative treatment.

To the GT trans, I would flush or drain and fill again with 3309. May be too late as those trans are fussy and if the fluid was in there over 100k you could have solenoid issues.

It shouldn't ever slip regardless if hot/cold or not

I have 115K on my 02 S60. Every 12 months it get a course of drain and fills with 3309. Shifts the same since new.

Amsoil is really great universal trans fluid and the only fluid I would ever consider subbing for 3309. I have that in a 98 S70 and that trans has 168K on it and no issues at all. Very smooth.

 

our 2004 S60 is manual transmission. But our 2001 V70, which has the same engine and transmission as the 2001 S60s and newer models, has 118,500 miles. We had the transmission fluid drained at 115,000 miles and plan to now do it every 30,000 miles to help keep it going.

 

My 2001 S60 has about 101,500 miles on it. I bought it 2 years ago at 95,000.. The car runs great except I notice sometimes when at a full stop & I take my foot off the brake, the car jumps forward a little but then rides & shifts without any problems. My questions are- I don't think the tranny fluid has ever been changed on this car, so is it still ok to change it or forget it? Also, what causes the slight jump occasionally when I start from a full stop? Any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks

 

Definitely get your car to the dealership and have the transmission control module software updated. The update will get rid of that neutral-on-stop "feature."

 

Do you know if the dealer does this free or is there a charge? This is somehow a relief to know it's not my tranny failing. Thanks

 

It won't be free but mine cost $125.

 

My Volvo dealer updated my transmission software for about the same price at the 105,000 mileage point. But they wanted about $375 to do a transmission flush and the service rep didn't even recommend it. So I bought the fluid myself and had an independent Volvo shop just drain the fluid and replace. I plan to do it myself when I hit the 30,000 mileage point using the 3309 fluid.

 

How did your S70 handle after doing the tranny flush? Was this the first time it was done to your car? I don't think it was ever done to my car, I bought it used 2 years ago. I am a little afraid to do it now if this will make things go wrong. Please let me know how you S70 is doing. Thanks!

 

I have a V70, not S70...........the V70 has the same transmission and engine as the S60. After the transmission drain (not flush) and refill, it's been running fine......could be my imagination, but seems to shift even smoother. That's why after reading all the posts on this forum about these Volvo transmissions, I now plan to drain/refill the trans fluid every 30,000 miles. We bought our 2001 V70 vehicle used from a private party with 65,000 miles on it in 2004. I don't believe the trans fluid had ever been changed before so it was the first time at the 105,000 mileage point. As I indicated, the Volvo dealer service rep recommended against flushing it if it hadn't been done routinely before.......in other words, don't touch it if it isn't broke. But reading this forum convinced me that keeping the fluid refreshed is important on these touchy transmissions and that's why I had the fluid changed at 105,000 and wish I had done it sooner but I wasn't aware when we bought the car. So, better late than never! By the way, my 2003 E500 Benz also has a somewhat touchy transmission and I'll be changing the trans fluid on it every 40,000 miles by the dealer..........too hard to DIY on the Benz.

 

Transmission failures are more frequent for the 2001 S60, V70, and XC70. We get quite a few of them in with failed units, although its not nearly as a common as an XC90 T6 trans failure. Frequent fluid changes help, but it wont fix an already busted or neglected transmission.

One of the best maintenance things you can do is flush the fluid and take the car to the dealer to have a TCM software update installed. While your at it, ask for a total CAN upgrade. This software updates all control modules in the car (including the TCM) and doesn't cost much more than a single software update.
