Default 1998 S70 GLT Transmission will not engage

Hey guys,
I just bought a 1998 s70 GLT with an automatic trans that will not engage. I can put the car into gear and it will move slightly forward or reverse then it acts as if it goes into neutral. The engine will then rev freely and the car will not move at all. I already have another trans to put in the car, but I want to make sure it is not something silly before I take the time to swap the trans out. Has anyone ever experienced this? Thanks for any suggestions and help.

Check the fluid level and see if it is ok. Actually it would not hurt to change the fluid out with the correct type.

The fluid level is fine and it does not smell burnt. I have no clue what fluid is in it, but I assume it's the proper fluid.
