1999 S70 Engine Replacement
Greetings all,
Bought a Volvo s70 a year ago with only 100 000 kms. The car body and working parts are great.
However...I just found out today that the engine is fried. Major oil burning through all pistons. It seems I didn't do my homework when I bought it and insist on looking for oil maintainence records.
Anyway, the rest of the car is in great shape, and I bought the car for only 6 000. Looks like new inside and out.
But now without engine.
Would you suggest replacing it with new or used?
What would I be looking at for range in price?
Thanks alot!

What kind of engine diagnostics have you had done to determine engine is totally wacked? Why I ask, is maybe someone had timing belt brake on them, and got a crappy head job, holes in piston heads, or something like that? The piston rings shouldnt be shot that fast, but like you said dont change the oil and see what gives first, right? I personally would get a used, and rebuild myself. But that varies on personal knowlege, experience, tools available and money too. GL2U

Thanks for the reply!
Pressure was tested at a very reputable Volvo garage, oil was burning through all cylinders, very poor percentage of function.
It is wacked for sure. No suprises there with the way it was eating oil at half litre per 400 miles.
The problem has been accurately identified. The question is where to go from here. I have never had to replace an engine before.
Does a person just walk away? On the other hand the body has 0 rust, the interior looks like new, everything else is good.
Cheaper to buy an engine than buy a new car. Used engine, rebuilt engine, .... Any other suggestions?
Thanks
JD

I personally would go used engine, and rebuild myself, or havea reputable shop torebuild it. Rebuilds when done correctly, are almost as good as new. I just wanted to know what was wrong with your current engine, that leads them to believe you cannot rebuild it.
