Default 98 S70 321k Miles Takes a Bad Hit

Saturday Night I was running to the store. A girl driving a jeep lost control due to ice on the road and came across the center lane crunching me and another car. Most important no one was seriously injured. My car was the only one that could drive away from the accident and I was hit hard! The other cars were really a mess with parts scattered everyhwere. Thankfully no serious injuries but we were all a little shaken up.

I have 321,000 miles on my car and it has performed flawlessly! Aside from normal wear items like suspension parts wearing out, brakes, drive shafts, and a muffler I have not had any major issues! The fuel pump going out was my biggest part failure. Thanks Volvo for putting the access panel to the fuel pump ON TOP of the gas tank! Anyone that has ridden in my car can't belive the smoothness and power the car still has after all the miles.

The car is a total loss and maybe the insurance company will give me a $100.00 I am waiting for their "number". I will most likely keep it and replace the fender and door but will have to have the door frame straightnened a little.

Sympathy cards are welcome

Happy Holidays!

Dude, if your car looks pretty clean and the interior is not trashed, other than the front drivers seat, you will likely get $3,100. That is what the car retails for even with the high miles. Looks like you had good tires. Don't let them get you.

Good News - you were pretty much spot on. It's a total loss and the insurance company offered me $3,500.00 ( I was amazed that much with the miles) or I could keep the car and take $3,100.00. So I am keeping the car! I will pick up a fender and door and have the post aligned.

I travel a lot in my business and burn through cars rather fast depleting the value in a very short time. I bought this s70 with the intent to just drive it until it won't drive anymore. The payback and utility of this car has been amazing!

Volvo's can be expensive to maintain, but if you are handy you can perform most of the work yourself and save a lot of money. I do everything except the timing belt, it would be like me to be off a tooth or two and ruin the engine!

Hey Greg, good to hear the insurance company stepped up.

As for the timing belt, I did a lot wrong when I did ours and still got it right. Just make sure you mark it and you'll be fine. Just takes a little time.

Make sure you get a 4 wheel alignment, or you may want to get that checked before you settle with a bent frame.

I have been traveling with work alot and haven't updated...so here is the update.

The insurance company gave me a very fair settlement - $3,300 and I keep the car. I could have got $3,800 but they get the car. For $500.00 the car was more than worth keeping.

It looks like Volvo only used one color white in 98 for the s70. I just happened to find a white volvo door on Ebay for $99.00! I picked it up in PA. See Pic. I banged the fender out until I can find a white fender. I know I could purchase a fender and have it painted but the cost go way up. The S70 just passed 327K miles!

My new addition.

I just bought a 2004 S60 Turbo AWD for 3k. See Pic. It is in great shape and has 119K miles, but needs a new transfer case. I can replace the transfer case myself with a used one or maybe even rebuild the old one.

I still love my S70 and continue to drive it everywhere!

Thanks rspi for the timing belt comment. I may give it a try.

Nice on both counts. Hope that S60 repair goes smooth. Congrats!
