Default ABS Module and other fun stuff

Hello all,

I just bought a 1998 S70. FWD, non-turbo. My first Volvo. Needs several things, but is in good shape. My ABS/Trac lights are on, so I am looking at rebuilt ABS modules. Has anyone ever installed one of these? Do the rebuilt ones last? I talked to a guy at FCP Groton, and he wasn't much help. Said "you get what you pay for." One year warranty on the rebuilt unit.
Also, the service light is flashing. Is there a way to reset the thing without going to a dealer? The guy who did the pre-purchase inspection said you need a special tool to do it, and the owner wasn't around so he wouldn't do it at that time. He said no service codes were coming up.
I bought this thing for my daughter to drive, but I may end up using it. I kinda like it. Its only got 38,000 miles on it (senior-owned for the first 9 years, granddaughter-owned for the last 1-1/2). I think is was a rough 1-1/2 years.

Thanks in advance, Bill

Have your module rebuilt for about $100.00 from here. http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/...vo_V70_ABS.htm

The service light does need a special tool to reset it.

There is a few out there gives a longer warranty but not sure who it is.

Thanks for the info. I'll be sending my unit to that guy.

Thanks again,

No problem.
Keep an eye on the local dealer near you and wait for them to do an oil change special price wise and have them change the oil.

Also some people will remove the bulb and not deal with getting it reset.

I sent my wife's 99 T5 ABS module to Vic (from the link above) and had it back within about a week. The car is perfectly drivable during this time. (no speedo)

I borrowed the E5 socket from my mechanic. It's a tight fit to get down there to undo the 6 bolts but not terribly hard. Very straight forward. A little 1/4 inch drive ratchet helps....and don't drop the long screws when they come out.

Thanks for the tips, tech. Auburn, my speedo is out now, but odometer works. I emailed Vic, and he hasn't heard of this problem. I'm hoping when I get the ABS module fixed it will fix the speedo.

I think it will. But I cannot say 100% for sure.

tech, I talked to the local Volvo dealer, and he quoted me $50 for an oil change. Funny stuff. I like your idea to remove the "sevice" bulb. How tough a job is it? Can I get it by reaching under the dash? Too optimistic?

Thanks again.

Sorry but most of the time you cannot reach it from under you have to remove the cluster to take it out.

Why are you worried about the service reminder light? It goes off by itself 30 seconds after you start the engine. Only a mechanic will have the tool to reset the light (unless you waste the money to buy one at IPD). If you have it reset it will just come back on again after 5000 miles anyway. Only the 98 S70 and the earlier 850s have this issue. You can reset the service reminder light in the 99 and 2000 S/V70 by yourself following the directions in the owners manual.

My Volvois a 1998. The service light does not go off, it stays flashing all the time. That's why I want to remove the bulb.
