Hi MasS70, so, did you get it? I just picked up a S70 GLT for my teen daughter. She smashed up my 960 so I got her a car of her own. She is on the "Wreck a car - Get a car" program. Not really, we were shopping for a car for her anyway. So now she has to drive my busted 960 until I get it fixed. LOL! It is driving her nuts.

I was a little concerned about getting a turbo as well. I always thought the maintenance would be more costly and did not want to give her more speed & power. But I must say that the car handles it very well. It's not like you press the gas and the car jumps off the road lol, just has good excelleration. My wife is always pushing me to drive faster. I'm really not in that big of a hurry. But a couple of days ago I was getting on the freeway and seen a semi coming, I was behind a mustang and thought, what the heck, there is no better time than now to see what TURBO means. I give her a little nuge and off she went, the truck never got close and the mustang just watched me go by. I look at the turbo as another safety feature now. I remember wanting to put my foot out of the door of my 740 GLE hoping I was not about to get run over. Get the GLT, and give it with a stern look.

Awesome! Again, the GLT is probably the best trim S70 for a teen...but that's an opinion from a teen. :P

My daughter finally has her car. I went and picked up a Yellow 850 R the other day. Her S70 GLT was so fun to drive I could hardly resist.

Got pulled over by not one but 2 state troopers the other day in her RED S70. I was toying with a Mustang and did not see them on the side of the road helping a lady change her tires. We never broke the speed limit so they did not ticket me but they heard my wheels spinning. LOL! They did not pull over the Mustang that was black and was long gone down the road by the time the troopers got to me. I really think it was a RED thing. The said they expected to see a kid in the car and was going to tell the kid to stop jacking around, they were very confused when they saw me driving. LMAO!!!

lol. My GLT is white. The other day I got stuck behind this old lady or someone who was going like 30 under the speed limit, so I changed lanes and there's this guy who's probably going 30 over the speed limit...so I just used that awesome turbo to pass and get back in the lane in front of the slug. My friend laughed when he saw on the smile on my face from using that wonderful turbo...:P

I wish they didn't make the S70 R exclusive to Europe...

Update from OP. First off, thanks to all who contributed to this thread. The input, comments and wisdom was very helpful! Over the weekend, I bought a 2000 S70 GLT SE, Green with tan leather. Wasn't really looking for GLT SE, just a GLT, but the car shows so nice with the upgraded rims, I couldn't resist. One owner car, brand new tires, timing belt replaced 15K ago, new brakes/calipers/rotors Paint is in great shap as is leather.. Only thing my independent mechanic (formerly worked at Volvo dealer) found wrong was A/C compressor was about to go. Based on some comments on other threads on here, perhaps all that was needed was the clutch to be shaved (?), but I convinced the seller to install a new compressor and recharge the freon.

One question: The leather steering wheel is shot. Any option other tna replacing the entire steering wheel?

Awesome! I'm sure your son will enjoy the S70. Also, be wary of the ETM...the '99-'00 are notorious for their ETM's failing and needing to be replaced.

Having learned about the throttle issue on the 99 and 2000 model years, made sure to check it out during the inspection. Mechanic indicated it had a new throttle cable.

Congrats on the purchase. One of the great things about 99+ S70 is the side airbag also offers head protection. The 98 side airbag does not reach the head. That was more important to me than the throttle issue. My car has given me no problems. It has been very reliable.

The side airbag was a critical factor in my decision. I wanted a Volvo for safety reasons as it's for a new teen driver. God forbid he has an accident, I wanted to maximize the chances that he'd be protected. The airbag setup far outweighed the throttle issue.

lets be honest. the volvo s70 is not a race car nor is it a performance sedan. Just because you strap on a high pressure turbo and firm the suspension up does not make it a drivers car. I love my S70 there would be very few cars I would trade it for, honestly. However I didn't buy it for the speed or the handling, after all its front wheel drive. I bought it for what volvo stands for...reliability, safety, and comfort. I have the base engine and its cool because every time I turn it on I smile because, next to the honda inline 4 engine, is the most reliable ever. Highway miles fly by but if I went agaisnt a Bimmer it would be ugly thru the straights and around the bends.
