A/C problems - diagnosis?

A/C problems - diagnosis?
Start car, very rough and loud for 5-7 seconds then stops. Same sound starts when I turn on A/C. Slight burnt smell following the first time this happened.
Compressor? Clutch or slipped belt? I've read about a bread-clip fix on the clutch but nothing that connects these symptoms with that solution.
All feedback appreciated - thanks!

No it runs. Sound is very loud only on start up for 5 seconds, and then very loud again if I turn on the A/C.
Serpentine belt was replaced over the winter, and this is one of the first times the a/c is being used since then.
My first thought was clutch disengaging because of no pressure / out of refridgerent, but it is really loud.... Could be compressor crapping out... ?
Thanks a lot for the feedback!
