Default A/C problems - diagnosis?

Start car, very rough and loud for 5-7 seconds then stops. Same sound starts when I turn on A/C. Slight burnt smell following the first time this happened.

Compressor? Clutch or slipped belt? I've read about a bread-clip fix on the clutch but nothing that connects these symptoms with that solution.

All feedback appreciated - thanks!

Are you saying that the car will not run? If so, take the accessory belt off then try to start it. If it starts, spin the accessory pulley's and see which one will not turn.

No it runs. Sound is very loud only on start up for 5 seconds, and then very loud again if I turn on the A/C.

Serpentine belt was replaced over the winter, and this is one of the first times the a/c is being used since then.

My first thought was clutch disengaging because of no pressure / out of refridgerent, but it is really loud.... Could be compressor crapping out... ?

Thanks a lot for the feedback!
John
