Default Front suspension issue...

The S70 came home today (from college) and it has a little issue with the front end (drivers side) making noise. Everything feels tight when I drive it but it's noisy, especially when going over pavement that is not smooth. When I jacked the car up the wheel has a little 3 and 9 O'clock movement. About 1/4 inch. No movement up and down. Is that a control arm issue, tie rod or some other issue?

It for sure sounds like your control arm. If you look at your control arm busings where they mount to the frame (there are two) you will probably find one of bushings wore out. Just jiggle the tire back and forth and watch the bushings for any play. If it's the ball joint you will find play where it mounts to the steering knuckle. Either way the control arm will need to be replaced. It's not too bad of a job to do yourself if you have worked on cars before, but it can be a pain doing it on the gargae floor. You will need to make sure you get the ball joint on the new control arm fully seated and tight on the steering knuckle. You will also need a front end alignment when finished. You can get control arms at FCP Groton. Also, get a Haynes Manual.
