Fuel pump leak. Check valve?

Fuel pump leak. Check valve?
2000 S70 Base, 160,000. We have been smelling fuel after filling up for the past year. I finally read the posts and decided to drop the fuel tank. With replacement hoses in hand, I checked them all out and they were all flexible and pliable. No leaks there.
I put it all back together but left the fuel pump plate off and filled the tank. No visible leaks or smell. I drove home and checked again and there was a small amount of fuel on top of the fuel pump inside the locking ring. It looks to be coming out of the short breather(?) tube next to the fuel lines.
Is there a check valve in there that isn't closing? Does it mean the fuel pump needs to be replaced?
Any help appreciated.
