Default Hmm, I think I've got a T5 (help confirm)

Unbelievable. This car was given to me for my daughter to drive. All along, I thought I had a non turbo since there's no boost gauge and frankly never thought that my mom would've bought a turbo engined vehicle.

Here's why I think it's a turbo...there's a pipe that runs over the cylinder head to the back of the engine bay. I happened to be looking at some non turbo engines and saw that this pipe was lacking.

I figured that the pipe was just some air pump stuff or smog stuff. Sheesh.

My dilemma is that I replaced the mass air sensor with a bosch non turbo unit. Is that going to be an issue?
I've also replaced the spark plugs and wires...again non turbo plugs and wires.

Have I screwed up?

Why don't these turbo vehicles have a boost gauge?
Also, I never hear any sort of noise from a blow off valve...do these not have BOV's?

Wow, I should've known that it was a turbo due to the acceleration since I've heard that non turbo's are sluggish. The car runs very well.

I've got to get a repair manual so I can see where these components are located!!!

While I can't answer you on the if you screwed up part by putting different non turbo parts on your car I can answer some of your other questions...

1. It does sound like you have a turbo. As the N/A or non turbo models don't have a black pipe going over the engine.

2. It maybe a T5 but there are other turbo models other then the T5.

3. The 70 series didn't come with a boost gauge period. So don't feel like your missing out on anything. The 850 models did and while they are a boost gauge you really cannot tell how much your truly boosting with them. There are no numbers on them just a white line.

4. There is no BOV on these cars. They have what is called a CBV. It acts like a recirculating BOV, but you don't hear it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blow_off_valve
"A compressor bypass valve (CBV), also known as a compressor relief valve or diverter valve, is a vacuum-actuated valve designed to release pressure in the intake system of a turbocharged vehicle when the throttle is lifted or closed. This air pressure is re-circulated back into the non-pressurized end of the intake (before the turbo) but after the mass airflow sensor."

The only way to hear it is to put a open air filter element on the end of your MAF and then you'll hear it. Sounds like Darth Vader.

Is there a model identifier on the back of the car? if so, what is it? GLT= low pressure turbo, 2.4L engine. T5= T5 (heh) and will have a high- pressure turbo, 2.3L engine.

check the emissions label on the hood, passenger side, bottom/ back. See what it says for engine size... 2.4L, with black pipe over valve cover= LPT, 2.3L=HPT.

oh, and yes, the factory boost gauge on Volvos is totally useless, unless you just want to know that there is, in fact, boost present, and can't tell by the fact that you're being pressed into the back of your seat S70s never had them, in any case.

and... you had other questions that I completely ignored! Let me answer them for you!
The MAF for the turbo and NA engines is the same... no difference, same part numbers. Same goes for the plug wires. The spark plugs themselves are different- different heat range, to be exact. Get the right plugs, after you've found out what model you have... GLT or T-5. If you don't, eventually, you could damage the engine.
