Default ignition lock cylinder - volvo s70 1998

Hi Guys,

I think I have a problem with the ignition lock cylinder. I bought a used 1998 S70 2.5 L non turbo volvo 3 years ago and yesterday, when I tried to start the car, the key rotated freely. I read it could be because my car was forced...but in 3 years it never happened.

Could you help me on that problem and how much it's going to cost me.

Thanks,

Raph

You need to replace the lock assembly in the column.
It will cost like $300.00 for the parts if you want to change it your self.
I would say about $500.00 if you have someone do it.

It is becoming a common problem on these cars.

Ok thanks...Do I have to remove the steering and the column?and how long it is going to take? What are the steps if I want to do it myself? Or for 200$ it's pretty much easier if a mechanic does it?

Thanks

Well I did one today and got lucky it took me about 1.5 hours.
You will need to remove the steering wheel,Turn signal switch, wiper switch,SRS contact reel.
The screws are break off screws. Today I was able to unscrew the screws using a Center punch and a hammer.

I'm seeing the same problem with my 98 S70. Any suggestions on where to get the part? Do I need to get it through a dealer?

Thanks - G

Yes Dealer only
I also forgot to specify above so I am now that it will take about 5 days for the part to come in.
They have to order it by the Vin# this way it comes already coded to the car.

Hi guys!

I'm a newbie in this forum.

I would like to seek your advise about my problem with my S70 2.0T

The story started this morning when I had the headlights lens cleaned. At the same time, I had the antenna replaced with an ordinary type one becaue the old one would no longer retract when I turned off the radio. Everything went fine after the works and I was, still, able to drive back home. The shop I went to is about 10 to 15 minutes away from my place.

Problem is, after a few hours (somewhat like 3 to 4 hours) the car's ignition switch would not even turn and the entire dash board christmas tree would not even light up. The ignition switch, I noticed, would not even go through position I. As if the switch is locked or something (even after I unlocked the steering)...

I tried changing the battery thinking that it could probably the problem. But it wasn't. The ignition switch, still, would not push through all the way to start the engine.

Really looking forward to receiving your thoughts and advise about this.

Please help.

Thanks very much.

Hi Tech.

Thanks for the advise. I guess I will have to go through your instructions - " You will need to remove the steering wheel,Turn signal switch, wiper switch,SRS contact reel. The screws are break off screws. Today I was able to unscrew the screws using a Center punch and a hammer.

Cheers for the group.

Hi
I have the same problem with my S80, 1999 volvo. The key rotates freely without doing its job. I'm wondering if I can buy a used column lock for it? I know that my keys should be programed to turn the engine on, but I'm wondering if I replace it with a used one, will it still work. I'll be fine to use my old keyes to open the doors. It's just too expensive for me to buy a new piece and have someone install it for me.
Any suggestion?

Yea, i would like to know the answer to the same question. I wouldn't mind having to use 2 keys to save some money.
