Default ignition tumbler broke

At the mall when I tried to start the car the ignition tumbler broke.
I did get the car started by using a needle nose and turning the it back out of
out posII to off and using the aftermarket autostart and putting it back into posII and taking the car home.

Now i have to fix it.. Do I need to remove the steering wheel to replace the part? I am figuring I have to key a new or in my case a used tumber and key mech. Do I need both units (as in key and tumbler) and the ignition module?

In the iterim... can I remove the tumbler mechismn and gerryrig it (ghetto style) so I still use the car and get the part?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

You need to take the steering wheel collar off then break the securing studs off. Then install a new ignition system with a new key.

RSPI, can the new key be programmed to the car without going to Volvo? I have 1 key to the S70 and have been looing on threads for quite some time to figure out how to add a key without going to Volvo. The key I can get from a place AZ. I send them a picture of the key and they send me a key. I think the key is pretty pricey but the site says you have to get Volvo to synch the key with the car. Volvo seems to think this is a very valuable service and they charge a pretty penny to do that. $300+ is a lot of money to spend on a key for a 13 yr old car.

What year is the car? The keys in the '98 cars do not have a chip and do NOT have to be programmed. I can get them from dealers for $35 shipped.

Did you mean to type $3,000?

I managed to switch it out earlier in the week. I got a used steering column and removed the ignition from it which was a pita since the one bolt wasn't coming out. On my car I didnt need to remove the steering wheel since the unit was removed or fixed by one of the previous owners. A hack job and thats why I guess it failed (broke) after 2 years of ownership.

The parts guy I got the column from was persistant in saying that the antennae for the key had a transmitter in it. But I guess for my year (98) wasnt the case. I read that it didnt but he was convincing and since the plastic cap that goes on the ignition was all wired in started to convince me.

Only thing now is the turn signal cancel doesnt work. Must be the tabs in the signal stalk no longer functioning which doesnt make sense since removing the stalk was just two torx bits and letting the unit hang.
