Default OEM DIN Cupholder Mod (EASY DIY)

Not sure if anyone has done this before as a quick search did not turn up any results so I figured I should share with you guys.

My girlfriend's 1998 S70 GLT had a broken armrest cupholder when she bought it. Turns out this seems to be a common problem and a replacement will cost you $40-$50 on ebay. I'm cheap so that was steep for a plastic cupholder piece.

I did some searching as she did have a cubby below her aftermarket headunit (the cubby kit came with the radio from crutchfield). I spotted a neat little unit that was stock on 89-95 Ford Taurus's and Sable's and if fit in a DIN Slot. Got the unit for $20 shipped and it was ALMOST a perfect fit.

I had to file down the sides about 1/16" on each side for it to slide in seamlessly. The only other thing I had to do was cut about 1/4" off of the eand of the right side of the cupholder tray (see pics). The thing slides right in, clips in and looks almost like a stock piece. It's also got a neat little change holder and dish in the tray above the cupholder tray.

Let me know what you guys think! Rate the thread if you find it helpful and feel free to ask/pm me any questions.

Thanks! Hope it'll end up helping some S70 owners out, though this should work for any Volvo with a free DIN opening. That is usually the case if you have an aftermarket headunit.

Nice work! I know one of my cupholders under the center arm rest is broken, so I can only carry one container. I don't however have have any space in the headunit as I installed my iPod connector through the factory stereo. Nice find though, I would have never figured it out myself!

What is the measurements of the space it fits in? My 960 has a horrable cup holder and I do have a space under my head unit that I store my garage remote in.

Thanks guys!

As far as I know its a standard DIN size. I'll take some exact measurements and photos next time she stops over.
