Thinking of getting an S70...
Just wondering if its the right fit for me. I'm big on safety, which is why I'm looking at this car, but I also want to be entertained (ie fun to drive).
How would a GLT compare to my current car (an 03 Jetta 1.8t)?
Is the T5 that much more noticable and fun to drive over the GLT?
I'm sure I'll search and find the answer, but if anyone has any insight on chipping these models (ie getting the GLT up to T5 performance) let me know!
Thanks!!

Welcome.
1. If you buy, buy a 1998 model. You do not want a 1999-2000 model.
2. If you can find one and can afford it get the T5 model over the GLT. It is a lot better and you'll be happier with it.
3. You can chip these cars but it is going to cost you. The good companies like IPD USA, RICA, BSR are $600+, the cheaper less researched and developed companies like Inmotion, Upsolute, SpeedTuningUSA are around $300-$400.
As for getting a GLT and making it a T5 it is possible, but a chip tune isn't going to just do that for you. You'll want to do a full turboback system upgrade, upgrade to the T5 turbo, intake and chip upgrade. Then you'll be close to, at or above a T5 model slightly. Or just go for the T5 model and mod it from there and it would be even better then a modded GLT.

The 1998 model has a regular drive by wire throttle body and they are a better year all around.
Just do not get the 1999-2000 model s70's.
T5s are fun to drive, but a GLT isn't a slouch. The NA S70 is... average. And I agree on the 98's being the better buy- 99s and 00s have the ETM trouble. However, now that more of those are coming off of the extended warranty, more and better aftermarket solutions to the problems are starting to appear which could reduce the cost of that repair (which WILL eventually be necessary) to a more manageable level.
The 1999-2000 had what is called an ETM (Electronic Throttle Module), A.K.A. an electronic throttle body. Known to go bad, that is why Volvo put a 10 yr 200,000 mile warranty on them after tons of people were having the issue of them going bad. Not to mention if it isn't covered under warranty anymore or Volvo just doesn't want to deal with it, it will cost you $900-$1200 to replace.

Yes. All of the 99 and 00 70 series are prone to the problem. I don't consider this to be a "do not buy the car" type problem, however, just be aware that the ETM will likely eventually fail, and you could be in for a heavy repair bill when it happens. But if you find, say, a 99 for less than a 98 with similar mileage and features, don't rule out the 99 completely.
oh, and as for comparing the car to your current 03 Jetta 1.8T... well, I have a '98 GLT, and I have a friend with an '01 Jetta 1.8T. I've also driven plenty of other Jettas and Volvos in my line of work. The GLT is a good match by comparison- both fun to drive, both have plenty of power, the Volvo is a lot smoother. Both handle well, the Jetta has a much tighter turning circle (duh, it's like 2 feet shorter!) but the Volvo, in my opinion, has better manners
A T-5, however, adds additional fun to the package
Also, T-5 is the only way you can get a manual transmission in a turbocharged S70.

Other than a larger turbo, what other differences are there between the T5 and GLT? suspension etc...?
also, how hard are these cars to work on yourself?
pretty reliable if the car has over 150k miles?
