what's wrong with my 1998 Volvo s70?
Hey my check engine light and service light have recently come on when I plugged my scan tool in I had no codes pending or saved? When I disconnected the lights stayed off for 10 miles then went back on. Also my rad light/low coolant light comes on and off depending on how hard I am on the gas lol. Also ive noticed the temp gauge will fluctuate from operating normally to dropping and then slowly rising but then dropping again. I'm assuming the thermostat is opening land closing pre maturely I know its not electrical because I notice the difference in heat from the vents. I was assuming the the check engine lights might be from the engine running cold and maybe having bad emissions causing a sensor to pick up errors as for the rrad light I'm assuming a loose sensor or maybe this goes back to the thermostat?. Thanks marks
Hi Mark, welcome to the forum...
Huh? Man, you are all over the place with this temp thing.
How long have you had the car? Did you scan the system with the light on? While the car was running?
If you have a coolant low light, what is the level in the reservoir? If you need to open the top to add COOLANT, do it while the car is cold first thing in the morning. Does the level drop or raise while driving? You may have to drive, stop and check, drive some more, stop and check.
The temp needle... does it go to 1/2 way and fall from there or does it raise higher from 1/2? If it's falling from 1/2 way to a lower temp, you need to replace the thermostat ASAP.
Emmissions? What does that have to do with coolant temp? Do you have a vacuum leak somewhere?

Several OBD tools allow for LIVE SCANS. The one I use is the ScanGauge II. It is sold at most auto parts stores.
