"Alarm Service required" message
Hi all. my girlfriend has a '99 S80 2.9 with about 157,000 miles on it. Recently when she will start the car, a message in the message center reads "alarm service required". Everything still works normally (alarm, locks, lights flashing when locked etc.) is this something worth having checked out? anyone had this happen to them?
Thanks,

The Alarm siren is bad.
The car might start setting the alarm off by itself.
You can't just unplug it either. It will mees with the other computers in the car.

I have started to get the message "Alarm Service Required" after locking and unlocking the doors with my remote. Tech, I assume this is the alarm siren going bad by your post. My question is, around how much does this usually cost to repair and how urgent is it that I fix right away or can it wait awhile?
1999 S80 T6
My alarm does the same thing. It goes off randomly sometimes when sitting in the parking lot at work... pissing off theparoll manager (her office is right next to my parking spot). Thats one manager you don't want to mess with. Anyway, the message shows up, sometimes it says 'Alarm System Service Required' and sometimes it says 'Alarm Triggered Check Car' and sometimes theres no message at all.
Tech is right, the dealer also said the alarm siren has to be replaced. I didn't replace it, but the frequency of lets-****-off-paroll-manager has gone dramatically down. Now it goes off once in a month or less. And my paroll manager quit too.
Thanks.

Mine does exactly the same thing. Sometimes it says "Alarm Triggered Check Car" but lately it says "Alarm Service Required",also sometimes my lights will just start flashing while it is locked (I assume a silent alarm...). Anyway, sorry about your paroll manager (or maybe that was a good thing).
I will get an estimate next week when I take it to my mechanic, probably won't get it repaired right now though since I have that more important issue of "water in floorboard" going on. Not sure I can do the tasting thing you recommended. May let my mechanic do that.
1999 S80 2.9 got message "Alarm triggered - Check car". The alarm siren had died! It was nine and a half years old.
Had it replaced this morning at dealer shop. Siren was $196.78, Blind rivet $5.30, Labor $257.50. Total $456.70.
Not cheap but necessary. Now I'll know what to expect on my other Volvo, a 2001 S80 2.9.

Thanks for the estimate. My Volvo does this as well.
My question would be, the little keyring fob, to replace that, is it included? Mine is damaged a tiny bit, but not enough to replace it, but looking at future costs.

Our 2000 S80 is giving this message.
Where is the module located on the car?
I have access to a 2002 Volvo station wagon in the junkyard, will the module from that work? Will I have to reprogram the fobs?
Thanks!
Dave

I had the dealer do this alarm sensor replacement a couple of years ago. $300 job but no more angry neighbors!
On my 2005 S80 sedan the computer message "Alarm System Service Required" started to appear after I replaced the battery. It appears when the car is started and can be removed by hitting the reset button and all locking functions work and there are no false alarms.
The car was not started or driven for one month and the new battery was found dead. Jumped the battery and it has recharged but the computer message continues to appear. Can any one help on how to repair?

Actually there is a fuse for the SIREN only portion of anti-theft system inside the drivers door fuse box. I pulled mine, no issues. It will not kill the Alarm Service Required message but at least you don`t need worry about the siren going off at will.
