Default 2000 S80 T6 Oil Question

Just purchased a 2000 S80 T6 with 116k on it. Performing the needed maintenance that has definetly been neglected. I can see that there is some sludge buildup. I will be taking the oil pan off and thoroughly cleaning that out (already have replacement parts.)

The question is, what is the best addative to use to clear out a majority of the sludge before removing the oil pan. I did find one that you add to the oil and run for 5 min's, but says on the back not to use with Oil Cooled Turbos.

Suggestions?

I wouldn't do a thing beyond regular oil changes every 3,000 miles for 15,000, then switch to every 5,000. I think you can do more harm by loosening gunk up and not being able to wash it out immediately. The only decent cure for that is to tear the entire motor apart and wash it out.

How do you know it has sludge in it? If you have to do something, use Seafoam.

Simple evidence of when I take off the oil cap and just by looking in there I can see some buildup around the wall from there. Also did take the oil pan off and found some in there. Not quite as bas as I thought, but still some.

Also I know that there has been a history of neglect from talking with the previous owner.

The oil pan removal is a PITA. You have to lift the engine and lower the sub frame. Good luck!

I feel that Volvo engineers should have to work on their own cars.

Wasn't too bad to deal with after I did this...
  • Removed front (passenger side) engine mount
  • Unbolted other engine mounts
  • Unbolted front sub-frame
  • Lifted engine using top hook lift
  • Lowered front of sub-frame using scissor jack
Good thing that I did remove the oil pan. Most of the gaskets were brittle, and one sucked in on one side.
This whole process was made a little more interesting since we just bought the car, and whoever changed the oil last time must have put the drain plug on with an impact wrench. Therefore almost all of the oil was still in the sump. Got what I could out of the cooler holes, but interesting none the less.
