2001 s80
3-4 weeks ago, I posted a thread titled Knock, knock, who's there? My S80 developed a knocking noise after an issue with p0118, and p0303 codes. I was able to drive it for a little over 200 miles when the knocking quit and all the oil dumped out through a hole in the front of the block. The hole appeared just behind the dipstick, about where I imagine #3 cylinder is located.
People say I am crazy for wanting to resurrect this car. Car has over 360,000 miles and a fairly recent transmission rebuild.
I have only looked under the hood to determine where the hole was, I have not looked into whether the engine in the car can be repaired or is it even worth considering trying to fix the original motor. It was still running (without the knock) as the oil was running out on the shoulder.once I got the car stopped, I cut it off.
My question to the group. If I do an engine replacement, the 1999-2001 S80 used a 2.8L T6, while the 2002-2003 S80 used a 2.9L T6.
Are they interchangeable, or am I limited to finding and using an engine from 1999-2001 only?

BTW, the only "hole" I know of in that area would be the blanking plug that you remove to put in the crankshaft lock tool. You have to remove the starter to see it. Maybe it came loose? worth investigating as it's a project to swap one of these motors.

I have located a 2001T6 engine with 98,000 miles on it.
I went to look at engine on Sunday. Guy told me it was running when he parked it - he is going to part it out.
I pulled the oil fill cap off and when I did, I got a huge whiff of what smelled like ether.
I pulled dip stick out and while oil was down a little, it was clean and did not smell like ether.
Coolant was a little low, but still visible in tank - it looked pretty clean as well. Guy told me that the cap had blown off the expansion tank and he replaced the cap and had not had any more trouble out of it.
What else should I look for as that might tip me off if the engine is any count or not?
I plan to do a compression check. Timing belt is intact.

Running when he parked it?? So why park it? Expansion tank caps just don't blow off. Low coolant & low oil means issues. Don't let the guy tell you it's normal... no such thing as "normal" loss of fluids. At 98kmi, I wonder if he's changed the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, etc. If not, it's due. IMHO, that deal has a few red flags to it.
I assume since you looked at it on a Sunday, it isn't at a salvage yard. I'd shop around. 2 years ago I bought an engine for my S40 for $600. Came with a 30 day warranty. I sold the car last year and the new owner is still driving it.

We have now removed the 360k engine and replaced it with an engine with 82k. Replaced timing belt, idler and tensioner. Engine fired up the first attempt, but with a few codes. P0722 and P1618 are the remaing ones.
I have been told this is referring to speed sensor on the transmission.
Can I get a picture with location of this sensor?

Ok, need some more help. The replacement engine, after 1100 miles has developed major oil leaks. I live on a very curvy road and as I was driving home one night, as I went into a curve, I got engine oil pressure warning, but as I came out of the curve, the warning went away. As I was less than .5 mile from the house, I limped on home. I looked under the car and I had oil dripping from front to rear on the right side.
So far, I have replaced the front cam seals and put a seal, or ing ang gasket on oil pump. Have done the rubber glove test on the oil fill to check for PCV issues. At idle the glove seems to suck inwards, but at throttle it tries to inflate. I have had the PCV box off twice, it's empty and seems to be intact. Have blown air thru all the lines, and have checked the ports in the engine block - they all are clear.
After all this, I still have leaks and the glove still tries to inflate.
Yesterday while running the car, even though there was no CEL, I checked and had. P0014 pending? Code. I have also developed a slight backfire when letting off throttle. And a somewhat uneven idle.
I don't have $$ to turn this over to dealership to figure out. I am hoping someone out there can help.

Hi again. We have fixed the oil leaks by replacing oil trap. Since then I have been able to put around 2000 miles on the engine with no major issues. The last remaing fly in the ointment is a pesky P0014 code which appears from time to time. I have replaced both the camshaft sensor and the CVVT valve but still get the code.
Engine runs good but once in a while I get a rough idle- kind of like a surging deal. Been averaging 26+ mpg.
Is it possible the CVVT valve could be wired wrong - the new one came with a different connector and 2 red wires which don't match up withe wires on the old connector.
We have checked the timing and it appears to be dead on.

When is the last time you changed the oil? Oil quality, weight, & pressure have an effect on the functioning of the VVT solenoid. Also possible that the cam shaft sensor is bad. Considering all the oil leaks you had, I hope the timing belt didn't get soaked in oil.
Hi, thanks for the response. I swapped the wires on the CVVT and the P0014 code disappeared. Car ran code free for over a week. Yesterday morning CEL came on as I was leaving parking lot at daughters school after driving for 15 minutes - codes 1332 and 1655 . Cleared the codes and drove the rest of the day more than 100 miles, multi stops with engine starts/stops. CEL stayed off. This morning as I was leaving the parking lot again, CEL came on and the same 2 codes were logged. car continues to idle and run great.
