Smile 2007 Volvo S80 4.4L Lower Control Arm Ball Joints Pressed In?

Hello Everyone,

I am a newbie in the Volvo Forum. I have a 2007 Volvo S80 V8 4.4L with about 115K miles on it. The ball joint on the driver side (LHS) boot is shredded and can be heard when driving over any bumpy road. No problem when its smooth paved road, like freeway. I have replaced the ball joints of the lower control arm on my father in law's 2007 Volvo s60 and know the BJ is held in via 3 bolts to the LCA for his model. The BJ in my 2007 S80 is different, in that it is secured into the LCA via 3 pressed pins.

Research online tells me that a few LCA parts come with pressed in BJ, but the majority of parts the vendors say fits my model are LCA and BJ sold separately. I would like to keep my existing LCA and grind off the 3 pressed in pins that hold the BJ to the LCA and simply replace the ball joint. All pictures online seems to indicate the sleeve the bolts go through are NOT threaded, suggesting that it is possible to replace the old pressed in pins with threaded bolts and nut to hold it in place.

Can anyone with knowledge provide insight please. Thank you in advance.

last time I did this, I simply sourced new control arms from FCP Euro which has the ball joint and control arm as a single unit. Lemforder is a good OEM brand (I think they may actually be Volvo's supplier for this) and they go for $125 a side. Benefit here is not only do you get fresh ball joints but your get fresh control arm bushings. You may still need a ball joint separator tool to get the ball joint released.

OK, got it. I was however, hoping to save and keep the lower control arm and simply grind off the 3 pressed pins of the ball joint, and replace it with a new ball joint that comes with 3 nuts and bolts that are marketed as being replaceable with this model. I guess what I was wondering is whether the new bolts will neatly fit thru the hole of the existing lower control arm that previously accommodated pressed pins. Not sure if I am explaining myself well enough here.

Has anyone out there kept there existing lower control arm that had the pressed pin ball joint and replaced it with the 3 nut/bolt ball joint?
