Default A/c Compressor Replacement?

2001 S80.

My repair shop said that my a/c clutch had lost it's tolerences; that's why my a/c cuts out when it gets hot after 20 minutes. They say the only way to fix the a/c is to replace the compressor. $$$$$$! After reading many posts and replys, it sounds like this is unneccisisary. Can the shop profesionally shim the clutch for less?; and they are attempting to fleece me?

They might not want to do it or know how to do it.

Default Im not sure

They said they will not do anything else because it is not a guarantee. The repair shop is well respected and has been around w/ the same owner for 30+ years. They mentioned any other repair would be almost the same price due to the labor of pulling out the a/c clutch.

Well I have reshimmed about 100 compressors and never had one come back not working.
The labor should be about 2.5 hours to reshim it.
SO do the math 2.5 hours labor compared to 2.5 hours labor plus like $400.00 to $600.00 for a new compressor plus the price of the dryer.

A couple of alternatives to try before reshimming or replacing the compressor: bypass the compressor's thermal cutoff switch, and have the evaporator temperature switch checked out to make sure it's not reading too cold -- this would incorrectly tell the computer to dissengage the clutch until the air warms up.
