I am continually getting "coolant low level, stop ASAP" and "coolant low level stop engine" warnings. The coolant level is always between the min and max lines. The temperature never moves from mid position. The local Volvo dealer cannot find a problem. any ideas?

 

Did they install a new sensor?

 

no they didn't change the sensor. I also have an emission system service message, that the dealer cannot resolve. Culd this be a sensor problem as well.

 

funny story,

One time my old car the 2001 s40, was accelerating by it self, like my foot was not on the gas pedal and it wud accelerate on it's OWN!!!!! And it was having a very difficult start, and when u started it it would cough ALOT and the meter for the engine heat would move quickly to the top. I dragged it into the gas station got my inspection stick (hahaha) then minutes later my coolant sprayed everywhere, it was smoking like crazy......THe solution was a new gasket and thermostat and a new sensor...

 

Im supprised they didnt change the sensor in the coolant bottle. That is what tells the computer if it is low or not.

Also which codes did they pull for the emmissions system?
What did they do to it?

 

On the emmissions problem they told me there were no codes relevant to this. Only a code related to "camshaft position sensor" which was probably due to low oil.

 

If the message was there that means there was codes. Look on your receipt and see if they put the codes on there. Most dealers will do that.

 

1999 S80 T6 owner here.. just turned 107K Same coolant warning light problem which occured more frequently in summer months than winter months. Warning went away when small amount of water was added to overflow tank. Diagnosis from dealer: they've been seeing the overflow tanks get small leaks in them as they age. Fix: new tank, new sensor $150.00
