Exclamation Emergency Advice Needed.

So this morning my dipstick head blew off completely and the rod is still inside.. oil shooting out on speeds over 30. I have to drive like this for about a week until I get the partarts for the pcv system replacement(breather box).

My wife is pregnant and I'm a soldier living off post so I have to drive it.
Can I tape the dipstick cover w duct tape or something and drive on it for a week or so or does anyone have a suggestion? Im in a bind here big time. Runs fine but oil everywhere.

When the job is done how can I clean the engine bay up as well?

Thanks guys!

You dont want to plug that hole in the dipstick!!!! You'll end blowing out an oil seal somewhere with the excess pressure. That sounds like an insane amount of pressure.

On the right of the two middle, black plasrtic pipes coming from your turbo there should be another pipe with a plastic cover that meets it at at "T". Remove the cover, pull the pipe out, disconnect the electrical connector then remove the plastic\rubber valve "thing" from the inlet pipe. Check to see if the hole (about 4mm or so?) it is clear, if not clean it. Ive attached a pic with the area I'm talking about circled.. The pipe that goes in there goes underneath the inlet manifold to the breather box.

If the valve is clear then you will need to let it vent somehow, either out the dipstick or the oil filler cap. Either way you might need to figure out a way to stop it puking oil. Cover it with sponge material maybe? You can try putting in the diptick, but dont seal the top of it, ie dont put it in all the way. The dipstick should prevent some of the oil going all over the place while not having it sealed will release the pressure somewhat.

For the oil mess, just get a bottle of parts degreaser and a brush from a local store.

/edit I just read that you have the actual stick from the dipstick in there. Leave it in in that case, it may help with the oil spilling out. Id guess the mess is from when the pressure built up and the released along with the oil.

Volvo P/N for the dipstick is 9454822. Its about $28 at the dealer, less from amazon/eBay.

Alright. Got vadis, going to get tools, need money for the parts and I will have it back to good in about a week. However, I'm running really rough now at anything just over 2k rpm. Really shaky..

idk what is going on with that.

Any clue?

(Driving without dipstick cap)

Also I don't really see in VADIS where the instructions are for replacing the PCV system. Any ideas??

There isnt a guide for replacement in VADIS that I know of. Its a pretty simple system. You'll need a fuel line separator tool too.
Rough idle could be fouled plugs or bad coils. Get the codes pulled and post them up.

Default Ah

I found the removal/replacement in vadis for the UIM so I'll do that and I can see that the PCV system is pretty basic. Yeah fuel line separator is a must. Hopefully I don't miff this up.

As for the shaking, I'm having a really hard time keeping my terminals clean and I replaced the number 5 coil over and all 6 plugs (from volvo). Was getting the misfire code (check engine light isn't on now somehow)

You'll be fine. Post back up if you have any questions, or send me a PM, I'm not on here all that much but I get PM notifications in my email..

Couple of pointers:

Not sure where you are located but if you can get all the stuff warmed up so it'l malleable that will help make it easier for you.

Be sure to unbolt the 17mm bolt on the driver's right (ie near front of motor) on the bottom of the manifold before you try and take manifold off. Otherwise you can break the vacuum pipe. Be sure to check this bolt for crud too.

You might consider cutting a slot on the left side of bolt hole of PCV tank for easier installation. Otherwise you need to remove the bracket that holds the alternator and AC compressor.

Dont forget to clean out that PTC valve I mentioned earlier. I've attached a random pic of my motor with the inlet manifold off.

Can you mark the area on the drivers right you mentioned and where I would need to cut on the box? I really appreciate it.

If you look at the inlet manifold in the first pic of the engine bay, the bolt is underneath near where the dipstick pipe bolts to the underneath of the inlet manifold. Its a 17mm head so its easy to find by feel. I didnt know about it, got impatient and snapped the thin plastic vacuum pipe that goes from it. This bolt goes though the ring at the end of all the pipes in the second pic. You can see the think vacuum pipe I snapped going from the ring to the top of the PCV tank.

I can't find a good pic of the actual PCV tank right now, but bascially it attached with two M6 bolts. The left bolt is tucked away under a bracket that bolts to the block. The bracket that holds the alternator and power steering pump. So you can either shortcut it by making a groove in the PCV tank, or unbolt all of that crap. Personal preference really. You can see this bracket on the left side of the second pic, its pretty big!

Do not hose the top of the engine down for fear of shorting out a coil or more...
