Default Engine light on

Hi guys,
I bought a used 1999 s80 2.9L, but the check engine light is on all the time.
The pre-owner said he had this checked before. He said it has nothing to do with the engine, just the sensor is too sensitive.
Is that possible? BTW, the sound of the engine is OK.

Have the codes checked and see what they are.

Have you been pumping the gas with the car on? if so you must take turn the car off or the light will keep coming on.

Why would anyone pump gas with the engine running? That's a major safety issue.

...no kidding right?

Just when I thought she was ok, the check engine light came on as well. Running like a champ. Guess I'll have to take her to independent dealer for code check (he has tool to do this). I hit 75K at about the time it went off. Is there a connection between hitting 75K and check engine. I would think maybe service light for 80K tune-up, but not check engine. Thanks

Is there any way to get the check engine code (out of Volvo 850 Turbo) by counting its slow/fast CEL flashing sequences?

Some of the cars I've owned (USA or Japanese made) had a handy way to get this CEL code out by unplugging diagnostic plug first and shorting out specified pins for a few seconds w/ jumper wire, and by counting its flash sequence with ignition on + engine off. Has anyone done this on Volvo 850 Turbo and have a list of CEL code? I am pretty sure that I can get the code out from AutoZone, but I am just curious if there is another way.

In addition, is there any way to clear CEL code (after correcting the problem, of course)? Would keeping the battery disconnected for a certain period (30 minutes or so) clear the CEL code?

Thanks!
