S80 clunking transmission
Hey guys and gals,
The 850 is running like a boss and now I started work on my GFs S80. Here is the deal. When she goes from park to reverse or park to drive, the tranny clunks like a drum. Also at highway speeds, I wanna say around 55/60 the RPMs go up, and the car isnt going any faster unless you really gas it. My first idea is a tranny going bad, but what do you guys think?
Thanks for the input,
J

When was the last time the transmission fluid was flushed?
What does the transmission fluid currently looks like?

I would start with a tranny fluid change where they drop the pan and replace the filter. That will give the technician a chance to examine the filter. Make sure it's someone familiar with the transmission because if the rubber gasket isn't put back on exactly correctly, it could cause big problems. FYI, I had to have my 2002 S80 T6 tranny rebuilt at 161K. The transmission was built by GM and I'm told is really not strong enough for the 300hp engine. Cost of rebuild was about $3,300 at AAMCO.
