i think they come on when u hit the yellow button on ur remote to illuminate the front end of the car, the yellow button on the remote in general ilumminates the entire car. Also I notice they are on just a little bit when having the headlights in the off position.....
Approach lighting
When approaching the car at night, press the yellow button in the central locking remote control. This lights up the interior courtesy light, parking lights, license plate lights and the lights in the sideview mirrors.

Thanks to all who responded- tried the yellow button, owner's manual is silent on the issue --again, as one faces the front of the vehicle, on the passenger side in the high beam assembly at 1:00, and the driver's side in the high beam assembly at 11:00 are single small bulbs-removed each bulb and checked, each bulb is not burned out--simply cannot figure out what purpose they serve or how they become active--is this just one of those mysteries ?? They must have some purpose..........HELP---
I'm not sure of the purpose, but in Canada, with daytime running lights, they are on all the time - in addition to everyo ther light on the car.

I have yet to find a w5w bulb. They are available in Europe. I've also done some other internet research because I was going to replace them with LED bulbs. However, everything I've read states that you cannot put an LED bulb into a headlight housing. LED bulbs cannot stand the heat generated inside of a headlight housing.
Other research would lend me to believe that a w5w bulb is the same as a T10 or 501 bulb.
The Sylvania website doesn't help either. Numerous auto parts stores where I live tend to look at me as if I've dropped from another planet when I ask about this bulb.
Has anybody else changed this bulb and what have you used?
