Default S80 T6 Transmission died

Hi Everyone,
My car is a 99 s80 t6, with around 190,000km on it. I have owned it for the last 80,000.
The cars has been pretty reliable, although the gearbox has always had trouble keeping the torque converter locker engaged below 105kph. Below this, its always surging, trying to engage it, and a second later lets it go again.
Also at times, It has been stuck in 3rd gear when the ATF level drops. It does leak.
Well this morning while driving it, i could hear a whining noise coming from the gearbox once i started driving... whining and bubbling maybe. A short way up the road, i notice there is no drive anymore... it just revs. So i pull over and add some AFT fluid, thinking maybe its low. This gets me going... but only for about 30seconds. At the next set of lights i cant move again. I found turning off and starting lets me at least move the car.

The car is now home, and deciding whether i try tackle a rebuild myself. Any idea on what the exact cause may be? I'm studying at the moment, so I'm not made of money, but am quite capable of fixing anything myself.

Thank you for any feedback.

Nick

Hi Barnacle,

I am sorry to hear that. But It happened with me 3 months ago and after doing all tactics I finally had to replace the tranny. Never Go for rebuild either from the mechanic or your self...I suggest if you could do it your self...then buy the used tranny and put it into your car. It will save time and money. Good Luck.

Thanks majorcode. I have had a good run out of the car, but i was surprised the transmission gave out all of a sudden, without warning.
Might look at a used trans then... if any of them are even good! The car owes me 2000NZD and 2 front strut mount bushes.... which i only replaced a month ago! So which ever way i go, i dont have much invested in it thankfully.

hahaha, Barnacle same here.....I spend only 300 USD on my first year use of Volvo with a running ok 20K KM. But all of sudden I got this transmission problem.....and spent 2000 USD. But frankly it never all of sudden if we know bad transmission symptoms...I always knew that my car don't change gear while in a cold drive....but in warm it was running smoothly...means we have keep an eye on the gear shifts. Good Luck.
