Default S80 Turbos

Hello everyone. I am considering purchasing a 2000 S80 T6 and had a few questions.

A brief search of this site and a few of the vendors listed here did not yeild much information about the turbochargers on this vehicle. What is the cost of OEM replacement? What are the upgrade options? Are there supporting mods needed when upgrading the turbos on this vehicle (injectors, exhaust, intercooler, etc)?

I have owned one Volvo before, but wasn't into the technical aspect of ownership (I've only been interested in actually working on upgrading vehicles since I picked up a 1994 Twin Turbo 300zx in 2005). Before jumping into this one, I'd like to know what I'm looking at from a maintenance/upgrade standpoint.

I apologize in advance if these issues have been covered multiple times already, and thank you in advance for your answers.

Mike

It is generally agreed that the s80 became ALOT more reliable from 2002 onwards... How much are you looking to spend on your t6? I ran a search in your area on cars.com and came up with

http://www.cars.com/go/search/search_results.jsp?ct=27&tracktype=usedcc& searchType=21&cid=&dlid=&dgid=&ami d=&cname=&mdnm=S80&mknm=Volvo&rd=3 0&ddrd=&zc=30044&makeid=49&modelid =2756&pageNumber=&numResultsPerPage=50&amp ;largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=descending &sortfield=PRICE%20descending&certifiedOnl y=false&criteria=K-|E-|M-_49_|D-_2756_|N-N|R-30|I-1,7|P-PRICE%20descending|Q-descending|Z-30044&aff=national

the 00 t6 im seeing for almost 11 grand, i would STRONGLY reccomend the 2003 model just above it for a grand more... less mileage also

in the end I can tell you an s80 isnt really the easiest car to mod... the suspension is a bit soft and that leads to you having to put a lot of work in.. if you can find yourself a good deal on a S60R then that is easily the best starting point to modify from...

just some advice, but in the end I love my s80 and it was a hell of a deal when I bought it...

Thanks, Nicolas.

I don't really have a strong urge to mod the car. I will be picking it up for my mother, and I will be using her Acura 2.2 CL as a daily driver while I pull apart my Z32.

The only reason I would consider a turbo upgrade is if the stock turbos fail. My only point of reference is the Z, and you have to pull the engine to swap the turbos on that vehicle. If it is the same amount of work with the S80, I would like to upgrade at that point just because I'm doing all that work anyway (my questions about upgrades/supporting mods was misleading - sorry!). In looking for OEM replacements/upgrades, I didn't really find anything though.

As far as the car itself, it has 80,000 miles on it, and the seller is only asking about $5,500 for it. I like your suggestion about a more easily modified car, but if I make this purchase, I'll be leaving it mostly stock so my mother doens't have too much trouble driving it.

Thanks again,

Mike

The Turbo shouldn't fail as long as you do regular maintenance on the car.

Thanks for the clarification.... well at that price man, I will tell you go for it... just make sure the timing belt job is done which is the main killer on these cars....

Will definitely do the timing belt after the purchase. Is there a recommended online store to get OEM replacement parts (timing belt kit, etc)?

Thank you again for the input!
