TIMING BELT

TIMING BELT
Hi,
I have 2000 volvo s80, with only 43,000 miles on it. I was recently told by the volvo dealer that the timing and serpertine belts were dry rotted and would cost $650 to replace. They said that even though there werent many miles on the car, the belt can still go bad after time. Just wanted to ask if this sounds right and if 650 about right anount to pay? I was thinking of calling a local mechanic and get a quote from him, but want to feel confident he could do it correctly.

RE: TIMING BELT
Hello Michael,
I'm an 850 driver and do not go out of the 850 forumusually, but at the moment everyone seems to be doing ok there, as there are many experts in the 850 forum, and the top-dog of the forum named Moderator Tech is back from vacation, so I thought of visiting other forums to see if I can answer general questions.
Yes, rubber parts start deteriorating after about 5-6 years, regardless of mileage. To check for belts, simply look at them to find cracks. No cracks should be allowed on the timing belt, but superficial cracks on the serpentine accessory drive belt is ok.
I am not sure how T-belt replacement is done on S80, but at the dealer the quote may be the average. This site may give you some ideas as to how much the OEM parts cost:

Make sure to get a written estimate from the dealer, and ask them to see if they're going to replace other T-belt related components (pulleys, tensioners, etc...).
If you believe the dealer is a bit costly, I would only consider a shop that specialises in Swedish/European makes. I wouldn't even think of having it done at a generic shop, especially those franchise ones.
I hope this gives you some ideas.
Time for me to go back to the 850 forum, good luck!
