Default where is the J-hose on 2001 S80 ?

Guys, I have a P0442 code on my volvo 2001 S80 2.9L. Some posts say that this is mostly likely caused by a leaking J-hose. Well, I got underneath the car, but could see find anything like a J-hose. Where is it exactly? Do I need to remove some parts to see it?

I would first replace your gas cap as it fixes that error code most of the time. The J hose is located near the gas tank in the rear. Some gain access by removing the rear passenger tire. I think the gas cap will fix your problem.

it is located in rear of car between rear wheel control arms. you will see the evap carbon consister there. you have to drop down rear portion of exhaust and heat shield to gain access to it.

unfortunately, changing the gas cap did not fix the problem for me. It gave me a P0445 code yesterday after I changed the cap.
After I cleared the code, and run the car until car is ready for emission check, a P0442 code pop up again just before I do the emission.

any suggestions?

Generic OBD Error Code Details for P0442

Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (small leak)

What does this mean?

OBD Code P0442refers to
This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as small as 0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

Symptoms

Possible sumptoms of OBD code P0442
You likely won't notice any drivability problems.

Causes

Possible causes of OBD code P0442
A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened: A loose or improperly affixed gas cap A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand) A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube Other small leak in EVAP system Faulty vent o-ring seal

Possible Solutions

With a P0442, the most common repair is to: Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back. Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses Sources: About.com

just changed out my J hose to evap canister this weekend and I tell you it was a very frustrating job requiring some specialty tools to do it if you do not drop the exhaust and rear suspension system frame (which in its self would be a big job). I have seen on the internet that dealers and shops charging big $ ($600-$900) to change this and I can see why. I did it without lowering the exhaust or frame but was very difficult to maneuver in such a small area. It took some time to first get the factory clamped clips off hose ends and then get new hose on to both outlets with small hose clamps attached.

I did not wait but I do not think they will clear itself after a few cycles. I just reset mine. I did see cracks in hose once I removed.

Smile glue it

I had a crack in my J-hose. All I did was to plug it with some RTV, black silicone. One year and no codes later it is still working.

Anyone have a picture handy where this is located? I went through the rear driver side wheel well and put some silicone on some hoses that looked a little worn there but I did not see anything on the passenger side. Code came back a day or two later.
