starter won't engage...
Howdy,
I just replaced timing belt, tensioner, idler pulley, and water pump. Tried to start and the starter spins without engaging the engine. Thought maybe Volvo had some sort of failsafe sensor in case cams were 180 degrees out. Rotated cams and tried again, same thing starter spins but doesn't engage. Makes a heck of a screeching noise too. Didn't think the starter was bad 'cause it's only a year old. Do ya'll think this is a bad starter or ??? The starter dosen't seem to be easily accessable, is putting in a new starter dificult?
Thanks,
Blockhead

Never had a problem before, the starter is about a year old. A little background: the belt broke while doin' about 65mph. When it happened I tried to start it and the engine turned over fine but too quickly, I could tell the timing belt was broken. I'm hopin' there is no internal damage to the valves and/or pistons. I know I'm kinda rollin' the dice here, but can't afford to take it to mechanic. The car had been sitting dorment for a few months and the battery went dead, had to get a new one. Does the solenoid on the starter just switch it on and off, or does it actually extend the starter gear to engage the flywheel?
