Default AC compressor won't engage on base 240

blue dash light comes on, ac clutch does not engage. just inherited car from daughter. Will the comp NOT engage is out of freon? Is there a relay or solenoid involved?

If you have a blue dash light I'm assuming you have a later 240. I'm reasonably sure only 93 came from the factory w/ R134a. Odds are your a/c is not engaging because the system is bone dry of refrigerant. I do not know the last couple of years of 240's well...my newest is an 89. It has no variable orifice. They are quite simple systems...not at all like current ones. You will want to replace the accumulator/dryer as it is most likely contaminated. After that, take it to a shop and have them pull a vacuum and leak test it. Converting to R134a from R12 is not nearly as difficult as was once thought. While it is always recommended to replace o-rings, it is not always a neccessity. Likewise, it is no longer neccessary to get every drop of the original mineral oil lubricant out. This oil is incompatible with the standard PAG oil used in R134a systems from the factory. With retrofits, it is customary to use ester oil which is equally at home w/ a factory 134 system or a converted R12 system. I converted my 90 740 by simply doing the following: added the proper conversion fittings to low and high side; pulled a good vacuum and leak tested it; added oil and R134a...drove off with ice cold a/c. It was still working great 2 years later when the entire engine bay was gutted for the V8. In fact, the compressor from that car is now working under the hood of my 144!!
A/C work is simple plumbing...except for needing a recovery/vacuum machine and a set of gauges to refill properly.
