SW Version On S90
I have a 2017 S90 (T5 Momentum). My local Volvo dealer will do SW updates if there are updates available when I take it in for svc. I'm at 70K now, and have been going to a local garage that specializes in Volvo. They are a LOT cheaper for basic svc than Volvo (up to 40% savings easily). Is there a way I can tell what version of SW my car is running and compare that to whatever is the latest available? The Volvo dealer told me "we don't know if there is an update until we connect to it to check". The local garage says that they cannot do SW updates for the Sensus system. That's fine w/ me, and I really am not having any issues. It was last at the Volvo dealer at the 40K mark in Decmber 2019. The invoice says "Performed 2.0 SW Update Per CPI 08-2018".
The only reason I would go to dealer for the 70K svc, which is pretty basic, is if I need a SW update. Any input is appreciated!

I'd tend to agree with you, but I guess it depends on what the update covers as well. Surely there is info somewhere that says 'here are the changes in this update to the software'. It seems that the car companies (other than Tesla) are not used to operating in that mode, but I'm hoping this type of thing will become easier to understand over time. Some updates may be worth $150 to me. Others may not!
While, in the past, Volvo provided free software updates at the dealerships, from what I've been reading recently, I don't think this is still the case. I've read of car owners being charged a fee (don't recall how much) to update their car's software.
