I have a problem with the windshield washer motor power supply.
have tested washer motor and it is in working order.
can you recommend a reputable supplier of wiring diagrams, there are so many online with download PDF's but I have purchased manuals in the past and found the download does not work.
Here's a factory wiring diagram for a 2003, unfortunately I can't find where 2/92 the washer pump relay is - says it's in position FMi3 - (6/2 is the pump, 6/1 is the wiper motor) - the 99-03 sv40 diagrams are sometimes incomplete or wrong. 2nd diagram is for a 2002 - sv40 - note there is no relay for the washer, it's on signal comes directly from the CEM. (in the 2002 diagram 6/10, 6/11 is the rear washer pump and wiper motor, 6/3 and 6/4 are the headlamp wipers, they come on when the windshield is washed.) It looks like if you follow the wires back (on the 1992 diagram) - lead directly to fuse b10. Grey wire from the washer switch, through the CEM to the Green wire out of the CEM and splits into three wires to the wash motor and hlamp wipers.
Thank you for taking the time, and for your very helpful reply. could you tell me what CEM means.
I have another developing problem which may have a bearing on the wash/wiper motor power supply which has developed today which involves the ignition barrel. Turning the ignition key to start the engine has twice (today only) failed resulting in the dash lights going out and the engine failing to start. The barrel of the ignition lock has become slightly sloppy now the car has clocked up 173000. If this ignition switch has become faulty can I replace it with a second hand part? Somewhere in my memory I recall there is a immobilizer imbedded in the ignition lock that matches the ignition key. If I were to replace the whole lock mechanism/key does the immobilizer have to mapped to the ECU?
CEM is the central electric module - looks like this,
Mounted above the drivers left knee (if my memory is correct)
"Ignition switch" - the tumbler the key fits into is replaceable. If there is a problem you would order a replacement from Volvo using your VIN. The new tumbler will then fit your existing key and no programming will be needed. The tumbler turns a rod that unlocks the steering column and turns the electrical portion of the ignition switch. Take the cover off the steering column and the electrical switch is visible on the left side and removed with 2 screws, A loose tumbler will not affect the electrical portion of the ignition switch. What goes wrong is the steering column lock breaks internally and does not let the key turn to the start position. The solution is a new steering column lock and reuse the tumbler (a new electrical ignition switch and antenna ring comes with the steering column lock) The sv40 99-04 is one of the few Volvos that the key tumbler is removable. ALL other Volvos in this year range are not. (some 760/960s in the early to mid 90's could be replaced by themselves) So you may have others be confused and tell you the steering column lock comes with a new precut tumbler - it does not - I can print the parts page if you are curious.
Immobilizer - the chip in the key talks to the antenna ring around the tumbler. If it's the correct chip the CEM will allow the car to start. SO - if you change the KEY (a new key or a different key/tumbler combination) - that will not work until that key is programmed into your CEM. Of course a different key will not open your doors.
"Turning the ignition key to start the engine has twice (today only) failed resulting in the dash lights going out and the engine failing to start. "
If you turn the key and the starter fails to engage - have you checked and cleaned your battery terminals? A poor connection at the battery can kill all power when using a high current load (the starter)
Or did the key refuse to turn to the start position? - If it won't turn your steering column lock is bad (have replaced at least 30). You will still be able to start the car by removing the electrical portion of the ignition switch and turn it with a screwdriver. (with the key in and steering column unlocked of course. )
