My experience with P171 and P236
I have a 2002 v40. At the beginning, I hardly noticed any performance change. whenever I reset the check engine light, it used to run fine for at least a month before the light comes back. Then it started to hesitate while accelerating from a stop. At first, I thought it was one of the O2 sensors but dicided to do some research on this. After searching every volvo forum, I decided to go through the process of elimination.
Checked for vacuum leaks, replaced one of the MAP sensors (intake) and fuel filter, but there was no improvement. Then I decided to replace one of the ignition coils. It seemed to improve a lot, but still the cel was on and I could feel a slight engine miss when accelerating from a stop. Replaced the other coil and then the car seemed to be running fine. But the cel was still on and it started to throw an additional code P237. Then I decided to replace the other MAP sensor with the one I removed from the intake side. Everything is fine now.
Both ignition coils and one of the MAP sensors were bad. This is the first time I had experienced anything like this for the last 25 years! Usually it is one or the other, not several bad components at the same time. Then again, I have been driving Toyotas until I bought this V40.
Other than this issue, I really like this v40. Based on my experience with this volvo, I took a chance and bought a 2000 S80 with a blown head gasket. It has been quite a challenge to say the least. Had to learn a lot about VVT and volvo timing procedure, dealt with a bad ABS module, and now SRS light is on as I removed the climate control unit without removing the negative battery terminal! Now, I am even afraid to touch the car
