Reset Service Light
This is from the Volvo 'bible':
Press and hold the trip reset button until the service interval indicator flashes (approximately 12 seconds).
Release the reset button within 4 seconds of the service interval indicator starting to flash.
There will be an audible signal when reset is complete and the service interval indicator will go out.
If the reset button is not released within 4 seconds the indicator will not be reset but it will stop flashing.
If this is what you did then it is possible that you waited more than 4 seconds to release the button.

Hi Bill
Tried what you said and still no joy.
On the other tutorial it said that you had to start pressing the trip reset with the engine off and then turn the ignition to 'I' while depressing the reset button held and then turn the ignition to 'II'. Is there anything in the bible instruction that you have that says your way should be done with the engine running or off?

Ian,
You have certainly caused some head scratching in my friendly Volvo tech's workshop. This is not a dealership but he is Volvo trained, as are two of his assistants.
In the instructions I quoted I missed out "Switch ignition ON". Then follow the instructions given.Sorry about that. There is no mention of switching the ignition whilst the reset is being done. These instructions are for the 1999 model only.
For the 2000 model year, which could have been released about October1999, the instructions are different.
Switch ignition OFF.
Press and hold the trip reset button. Switch ignition ON.
Keep the button depresseduntil the service light starts to flash (approx 10 secs).
Release the reset button within 4 seconds. There will be an audible signal when the reset is complete and the service indicator will go out. If the reset button is not released within 4 seconds the service indicator will stop flashing but will not be reset.
And this is where the arguments started. The V40 was released in the UK in 1996. The "bible" states that from 1996 to 1999 the service light can only be reset using diagnostic equipment. I have a Draper service light reset tool for my '95 850. I have checked the instructions and it shows theS/V40 up to 1998/9 as being one of the vehicles the tool is used for.
So it depends on when your car was built as to how to reset the light.
Bill.
