Default stalling at idle...

02 v40 - 67K

Wife was driving car today and got stuck in very heavy traffic. All of a sudden, idle get rough and car stalls. It will restart but unless you give it gas, it just dies. With it running and giving it gas, the idle is smooth but as soon as you let up on the gas, it dies. No smoke or smells..... Fuel system was recently cleaned and performance was much improved, but now this.

Fuel pump? Throttle control module? Any other thoughts?

She had it towed to the local shop. When I met her there, I saw what I described. If you give it gas, while on the brake and shif into D, you can actually get it moving. But let up on the gas and it gives up....

Is the check engine light on?

It could be many things. Maybe there is codes stored.

Problem easily solved!!!! Went to my local independent who found the rubber gasket around the air filter was pretty much totally disintegrated.... Filter was filthy as well. Hate to say it but I was neglectful in checking that.... Anyway, installed new filter and cleaned MAF. He checked for any codes but none were thrown which suprised me. Anyway he said any signifigant amount of filth getting to the MAF could really screw up the signal to the computer and play all kinds of games with the idle speed, etc.

So $12.00 later for the filter and a courtesy code check, I'm on the road again....

Somehow I know Volvo would have charged me $300+ just to drink their coffee.

Tech, does all this make sense? Thanks!

When the car idles really low, and it sputters and shakes really hard, then probably you'll have to change the coilpacks and get a top coolant sensor. I was even thinking if that would be a low automatic transmission fluid levels that makes the car idle.
