First time buying a Volvo - "whining" noise (ish?) from engine area?

Hey, I'm looking into perhaps buying a 2005 V50 w/ a 1.6l diesel engine and I'm wondering whether it sounds right.
When the engine runs, there is a sort of whining noise in the background, It sounds kind of like a fan so perhaps a pump of some sort? I attached an audio file, first I record from right next to the engine and I then move to the driver's seat. It's in the mid-high frequency range and gets higher in frequency when the RPM climb. It's somewhat noticable from inside the car and fairly noticable outside with the front panel opened. When driving my 2005 Volkswagen Passat 1.9 Diesel I notice something that sounds about the same, but it's not as noticable and tbf I can't really hear it when the engine is idling, like I can in the V50.
The noise is not really a problem to me in terms of comfort, but I need to know whether or not it's healthy before I make a decision on whether or not to buy the vehicle.
