Default In need of desperate help

My Volvo V50 2.0d 2006 estate tale of woe is as follows. If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

1. The intake manifold initially cracked, requiring replacement. This is where the fun started, as the car went in starting every single time, despite being down on power and billowing black smoke out.

2. Went into a Volvo "specialist" to be fixed.

3. Came out on new "second hand" intake manifold, refusing to start. Nothing wrong with replacement manifold, but reverted to original and car started again, but obviously down on power and the smoke returns. But now has a hot start issue, whereby car started when cold but after driving a while, refuses to start until cooled.

4. Took to another garage, manifold swapped and no start issue diagnosed down to cam position sensor gap being set wrong? Drove off, hot start issue still present.

5. Garage could not find any further faults and released car with no extra charge as not fixed.

6. Car progressively got worse over next week or so and now, cranks but no longer starts.

Any input would be appreciated as apart from this ****le the car is in awesome condition and don't want to scrap it as they'll only offer about £100
