When cold starting, my V50 can rev up to 4000rpm for about 1 second then revs down to the normal cold start idle or has trouble starting like it is getting too much gas. There are no codes showing up. The Volvo dealer (Herzog Meyer, Portland, OR )can not diagnose the problem.

I don't know the exact RPM, there's a bulletin about it (unless it has been deleted, it was around when the P1 first came out)

 

This is normal... Even at 4000rpm... my V50 used to idle at 3000rpm and I thought THAT was scary. One morning it went up to 3000rpm and dropped to 0 (shut off) then turned back on. It only happened once... You'll need to press the accelerator 1-2 times before you start it up (push it all the way to the floor), it might help you a bit.
