Cool V50 Particle filter

I have a 2005 V50 2.0D that has done 75000 miles. My dealer wants to replace the particle filter at an outrageous price of £650. Is it really necessary to change it?
Thanks
Rik

Yes, it is supposed to filter out the nasty bits from the exhaust. But they want to fit a new one after 75000 miles for £650. That is outrageous.
