Default 2000 V70XC 3rd Brake Light Only Works with Tailgate Up

Hello All,

I have a 2000 V70XC Wagon and there's a strange problem with the 3rd Brake Light (the LED light in the center in the tailgate).

The light works when the Brake Pedal is pushed only when the tailgate is open. I had my neighborpush the Brake Pedal as I observed the light and it works when the Tailgate is open at least 1 inch - which is just about all the way to the latch. When she's holding the Brake Pedal down, I can open and close the tailgate and the brake light will go on and off the same position - the same 1 inch or so before the tailgate hits the latch.

I'm guessing this is either a short in the wire harness where it loops over the tailgate hinge or some kind of position-sensitive switch in the tailgate that's gone bad.

Does anyone have experience in this kind of 3rd Brake Light failure and how to fix it?

Regards,

Bo

I have seen this many times a wire breaks in the harness on the hinge causing the problem.
