i hear a lot of horror stories about the v70s transmission is this just a myth or just poor maintainance habbitshelp meout here on the pros and cons

 

The problem with the P2 (2001-2007) transmissions is mainly limited to the '01s and some '02s. Volvo had a "neutral stop" feature which put the transmission in neutral when the car came to a stop, as in stop lights or signs. When you began to accelerate again, the transmission would typically engage in a harsh manner resulting in a rapid deterioration of the transmission. There was a software upgrade to stop this feature, but most people with any idea about the volvos will avoid those years with an automatic transmission. If you find one with a manual you'll be fine. Anything later, and you'll want to check the service history of the transmission, and make sure it has been flushed. (Yes, I know the manual calls it a sealed system, but it DOES need to be flushed around every 60k miles.)

Another issue is the ETM, or Electronic Throttle Module in the 2000 and newer models. This isn't really an issue as Volvo has an extended warranty program that warrants this part to 200k miles or 12 years.

And by all means, find another T5!!! Good luck!
