Hey Volvo ppl!
I have a 2001 V70 T5 automatic 104Kmiles that made me a surprise today.

3rd gear stopped working today. Whenever it's time to shift to 3rd gear the engine revs up but the car doesn't accelerate. If I shift manually, 1-2-4-5 gears work.
At 3rd gear, the same thing happens.. engine revs up, but the car only slows done, like in neutral.

Any idea what can cause this? Do I need a new transmission all together or is there an easier less expensive fix?

I guess I should add a pre story... I had some issue with transmision before. Whenever I was slowing down and roll at about 25-30 MPH from a higher speed and accelerate there was a delay shifting from 3rd to 2nd gear. It could be a second or 2. Transmission fluid was clean and changed at about 90Kmiles. Also when engine is hot if I switch to Drive there was also a bit of a delay and a clunk.

I took it to mechanic and he adviced to add one of those "transmission conditioners" or whatever they are called. Supposedly you can add it to a high mileage transmision and it will take care of slipping and make it shift smoother. Gear box was full with fluid, we drained one qt. we added one qt of that special liquid. Everything seemed fine, until I drove it home and realiezed that 3rd gear is gone.

Any place you'd recommend around San Jose, CA or Bay Area?

Sounds like the tranny is about shot.
