Default 98 v70 problem

I recently had my '98 V70 serviced for the 70K, replaced timing belt, and ran into a big problem. Because we are in a rural area, there aren't any Volvo servicing centers and I took it to my usual Volvo repair man. He has always been very honest in the past. I noticed that the car was wreeking of oil, took it back to him, he removed the black Volvo cover and lifted it off and oil was pooling. We noticed that there was something that looked like a resevoir and a few spots where I believe screws were removed. Perhaps something was not replaced before it was finished, not sure, but he phoned two Volvo service men from the region, they had no ideas about what he was talking about. They could not explain it. I took my camera in and took quite a few photos, which I am posting. Has anyone seen anything like this and what in the world is missing. If anyone knows please give me a little insight. Here I was doing preventative maintenance (I have learned my lesson more than once about the timing belt and even a timing chain) and now I am sketched out that this is going to be a very big problem. HELP

Ok here is what needs to be done.

Clean all that very well. Then replace the oil cap seal. Also clean the Vent system out.

Drive for a little while and see if it leaks again.

A clogged Vent system will cause the oil cap to leak the oil into the Cam cover like that.

+1....the pcv system (vent system) is what needs servicing. fcpgroton.com sells a kit for your car to do this (all the hoses and clamps, and the oil separator which is located under your intake manifold- where the rubber hose from the top of the engine runs to). If you want to do it fully, this is what it will take. I did it on my S70 (also '98- so the same pcv/engine configuration as your V70) last christmas and it took about 5 hours for the entire service. You will need an intake manifold gasket, but they are cheap- only about $5.00.

I will add that the oil filler cap seal didn't do it for my car although it might for yours. Sometimes these caps just wear out. In that case, buy a newer model Volvo (newer V70 for instance) oil filler cap and it should take care of it. The holes are suppose to be there on top of your engine and so oil is not bubbling out of them- a common misperception.

Thanks for your replies.

It has been cleaned up, not the vents, the oil pools.

I am still in a quandry though, the small resevoir and the screw holes to the sides of it is what is bothering me. I cannot find a diagram anywhere that shows this configuration. A temporary cap has been placed over the larger hole, but this cannot be the original deal. It looks to me like something was pulled. If the holes are supposed to be there: why are there threads as if screws should be there. I feel like the person who worked on my car left all of this off and I have no diagrams or anything to show this. This is so frustrating.

That hole would be for the Pair Valve if your car Had the Air pump setup with the Valve.

There would be a Metal pipe that screws into there and goes to the back of the engine.

If it was missing the car would sound like it had a Big Exhaust leak.
