ABS Computer replacement

ABS Computer replacement
I have a 2000 V70R AWD.
The traction control & ABS warning lights are on and the tech says I need a new ABS computer.
$850 for the computer + 4 hours labor + fluid = around $1,500.
Question 1:
Can a "backyard" mechanic do the ABS replacement?
I've been working on my own Volvos since I bought my '83 245T new. But these new 850 & V70 are getting pretty complex.
But it looks like this could be a case of unscrewing the brake lines, replacing the ABS, hooking everything back up and bleeding the system.
Question 2:
Do i need a special computer hook up to the ABS to bleed the brakes?
After I replace the unit, and I do a pressure or vacuum bleed of the system and get all of the air out of the ABS actuator?
Question 3:
What is a crossover part for this ABS computer?
Can I use the ABS computer from a 1999 or '98? Can I use the ABS from a FWD?
I other words, if I am at the wrecking yard, and I see an ABS computer in a 1999 FWD S/V70 can I harvest the unit and use it in my '00 V70R AWD?

Looks like it's Volvo Part # 8622097 which is for 1999-2000 AWD or FWD with "TRACS"
From that you'll be bound to a 1999 or 2000 model but either a FWD or RWD model will have the same module. If you're at a wrecker you won't be able to see the part number on the ABS unit before you pull it because it's on the bottom side. Models WITHOUT "TRACS" use a different module.
Edit: You can harvest the unit from a C70 (99-00) as well.

You can't leave a comment like that hanging.
How handy do I need to be, and what do you mean by "open up the module"?
Do I need to remove the ABS from the car and open it up?
Once removed, what do I "repair" and where do I get parts?
I'm all about keeping expenses down (cheap) - but I'm not a real creative guy, I am more KISS - unless there is a "open it up, and pull out the dead hamster. Now, go to the pet shop, buy a new hamster..." I think I may have to limit my self to "go to the wrecking yard, find a dead 2000 FWD S/V70. Pull out the ABS..."

Does anyone know if there were '99/'00 S/C/V70 WITHOUT "TRACS"? If I look on the dash board, do the non-TRACS cars have a the "DSC" disable switch? My '02 S80 T5 Elite didn't have TRACS, but it had a DSC disable switch on the console.
What about the bleeding of the ABS actuator? Do I need a ODB-II hookup to bleed the ABS module?

I found a local Volvo / BMW / Volkswagen repair shop that has a replacement part that is "compatible" with the OEM part I need: 8622097.
Has anyone heard of "Programa" ?
He says their part is $350. His shop uses it instead of the Volvo part, and he has done at least 100 in the last 5 years - 99.9% fine with no warrantee returns.
As he explained it, Programa gets cores and "resolders" the internal connections to the electronic components. They test it, and sell them as "reconditioned". They can't re-program the firmware, but most of the ABS controller failures are related to broken solder joints.
He also explained the procedure for the replacement - and it turns out my original tech had SOMETHING wrong with his estimate of 4 hours to R&R the ABS controller - he says it can be done in less than 1 hour shop time. The don't touch the plumbing, the pump or the actuator - they just replace the brain. He said in the 5 years they've been doing this, they had 1 out a 100 that needed the actuator / pump replaced - the other 99 was the ABS controller.

Look at this
http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for...ic.php?p=46827
It took me about 10 minutes to remove it. You can get the socket at auto zone, you have to buy the set. Opening is the toughest part I used a utility knife with the blade pointing down toward the solenoid side to cut around it before prying it apart.

After reading the link about cold solder joints in the ABS computer, I decided to give it a try. What the heck: Worst case is it wouldn't fix it, and then I would have to use it as a core to buy a new one.
And, it worked!
I used the 5mm 6-sided socket to remove the torx head bolts and then had to break the plastic case around the seam. Major pain (literally) to remove the torx bolts - big hands and a small space. I used a lot of clear Silicone Sealer to re-seal the box.
Total time: 2 hours from start to finish.
I found the 2 big pins had really ugly solder joints. I applied a little rosin flex and reflowed those 2 joints. The rest of the joints looked okay, but I reflowed the ones for the big, external, connect too (just in case).
I drove it this morning and everything is fine: No warning lights and the ABS system kicks in for a panic stops.
Wow. Saved myself at least $500.
Thanks.

Sorry was not able to get back on to reply.
But we had a post here about doing it located here.https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-850-16/abs-controller-cover-removal-11104/
