Default Correct Tire Size

I have a 2002 Volvo V70 T5. The owner's manual says to be very careful about using the correct size tires or it can ruin the transmission. The original size was 215/55 with 16 inch rims. When I purchased the car it has 17 inch rims and I notice that the tires are 225/45. Various websites say you can use 16 or 17 inch rims but I just want to be sure because I've just had to have the transmission rebuilt. So, I just need clarification so I don't have further problems.

Thanks!

That's fine. the first number is your width, so at first it was 215MM width and the new tires are 225MM. MOre rubber on the ground. The second number is your aspect ratio, or how tall your sidewals are.
