driveshaft
My 2000 v70 xc developed a vibration yesterday. i took it to the local garage and the serviceman told me the rubber mount on the center bearing of the drive shaft was very damaged. he said the rubber mount was not a part that could be ordered and that he would have to order a new driveshaft($1070). hes looking for a used one worth installing, but it doesnt look promising. can anyone agree or disagree? i live in vermont, does anyone know where i could find a used one in nearby?
I don't know about this particular part, but in my 40 years of dealing with cars and parts and that sort of thing, my experience has been for car-specific parts the indy mechanic can't get, you should go to the dealer and ask the guy at the parts desk to look through his parts ordering book. At 10 years old, it shouldn't be obsolete (yet) and might be available through Volvo. You'll probably pay more money than you'd like to, but if it can be obtained and installed (i.e. not an integral, unreplaceable part) you'll save money. You might consider a dealer replacement, too, since your shop probably has never done one before. Have you checked the online parts suppliers discussed here?

sweedishautoparts.com has them for $865.86. There is a $200 core charge.
If you have jackstands or ramps, and a set of wrenches you can easily do this yourself.
Shop around, volvo part number is: 8602507
I'm not sure where in VT you are, but my parents used to use northern motorsport in Wilder. I used them for some work on my mazda about 5 years ago (at the recommendation of the mazda dealer who couldn't find the problem I was having at the time). If you don't use the dealer, I would consider them.
I had the same problem on my '98 awd and didn't want to spend the big $$$ for a new drive shaft. I replace my carrier bearing with bearing from a 960 rear wheel drive wagon, the mounting bolt spacing is the same however the actual bearing inside demension is larger on the 960 than the V70's so I had a local machine shop make a bushing to make up the difference. I had it machined for a press fit. The V70 AWD drive shaft can be taken apart at the universal joint by loosening the bolt inside the universal joint then drive the joint off the spline. After the drive shaft is separated the carrier bearing can be driven off the driveshaft with a drift. After you purchase the your new bearing ( about $38.00 from FCP Groton or buy one from a Volvo Dealer for about $ 100.00) take it and the driveshaft to a local machine shop and have the bushing made, they probably can press the the whole thing together for you. The 960 carrier bearing is alot stronger than the V70 bearing because it receives all of the torque necessary to drive the car and will last alot longer. You can still drive the car without the rear driveshaft. Make sure you check the CV joints on both ends of your drive shaft if there is any play in either one replace it while you have the driveshaft out because you will still have vibration. The front cv joint goes bad first because it is close to the exhaust system.
thank you for all of the input. rgreen4 that is a great idea, although ive now got a rebuilt driveshaft from coloradodriveshaft.com for $500 with a $75 core charge and shipping both ways included. ive been driving the car without the driveshaft for 2 weeks and it drives fine, its just a bit less stable in the snow. thanks again for the suggestions
I had the same issue. I went to the dealer and the wanted $1100.00 for the drive shaft. I did a little looking around and found a drive shaft company and got one for less than half the price. I saved lots of $$$ and received a great shaft no issues at all. Visit Wholesaleimportparts.com. Hope this helps every one save some money.

Hello ecberr, FYI: There's a good Volvo mechanic near you in New Haven, VT. It's called Packard Motors. Also, in So. Burlington (IIRC) is Dave Neilson. His shop is in the old Howe scale industrial area. If you go to New Haven; go to the laundramat and say hello to the three legged cat. Kira
