Default High oil consumption V70

I have a 05 V70 2.4 non turbo 95K that's using more then 4 qts every 5K. I'm using Castrol 10/30. I bought the car new and have chg the oil every 5K and have noticed increased oil comsumption in the last year. I have never serviced the oil trap system. Volvo recommends replacing at 120K. Could this be causing high oil use? I see no smoke nor leaks. I understand in 03 Volvo chg the oil trap system so it dosen't blow out seals anymore. Thank you.

Ken

Default Border line

Hello, I've always heard that anything less than 1 qt./1,000 miles is consumption you can live with. On these Volvo boards service of (change) your oil trap box and hoses is practically a battle cry. No one ever mentions smoke. I would change the oil trap if I were in your shoes, given the description. For your amusement-and to postpone the oil trap job-you could try a different brand of oil. Thanks for the reply I heard this is not a fun job, but do able for a do it yoursefler. I have heard the fuel line connection is a pain some sort of qiuck connect but on the 05 it looks like a tork screw hold the fuel line on. I think I will go to full syn oil after this job. I was thinking of trying diff oil but I think the car should be able to run 5K on an oil chg with out adding 4 qts. I heard the seals don't blow out on the 03 plus model years.

Classic PCV blockage.

This is from 1998 S/V70 series to give an idea. 2005 PCV is different.

I know this thread is old, but I am curious if the OP has any updates to offer? Was it the PCV?

My wife's V70 has suddenly started consuming oil but the engine, our garage floor, and the bumper above the tailpipe are all completely clean.

I bought a 99 with 245K miles. Owner said it uses oil. I noticed a terrible smell at idle.
New oil cap seal fixed the oil usage (it was leaking on the top of the engine and would burn off, no drips) and replacing the PCV fixed the smell. All told, about a 6 hour newbie job. One great thing was the bottom bolts on the intake didn't have to be removed to get the manifold out. They also hold the gasket in place at installation. Cool idea.

Default excessive oil use

ha ths problem been resolved? I am oing throug the same thing on an 01 XC70. Isuspect that the turbo is one bad and the seals are allowing oil to be ckd into the system Any thoughts on this?

Hello,

Just wondering if there was ever any resolution here. I have the same problem with an otherwise great-running '04 T5 non-turbo. It will go for a few weeks needing no oil then I'll have to put in a couple of quarts. Then the next week it will need more - there's no consistency to this. But there's no oil leaking for sure, it must be getting burned off.

I'm a competent DIY mechanic but it looks like changing the oil trap is quite a job. I got quoted $400 by a good independent Volvo shop to change it. I don't mind paying that if it will solve the problem, but I would like to know that this has worked for any of you in the past.

Thanks!

98 V70 did an oil change an was shocked at how little came out no oil leaks, clean exhaust --but that oil cap shows signs of leaking like a sieve --replaced seal with thicker gasket material hope that works. Also shows gas escaping thru the oil dipstick tube, must I change the PVC valve, yuck.

Very true. Any Turbo model you are more likely to have PCV issues.

Turbo's always sound cool. But it ends up being quite a bit more work as I have learned over the years.
